Kuvah - Legend of the Sea

Kuva tells the story of Ekema, a “no good” fisherman, down on his luck. In a fishing society where a man’s worth is a derivative of his fishing prowess, Ekema finds himself the lowest rung in the society’s ladder. He finds himself, through no want of efforts, unable to measure or match up to his mates which leads to constant ridicule from the society in general, but a certain Njie, the “King Fisher” in particular. His only source of solace is from his two friends, Eposi and Lyonga. He hates his fate and wishes he had more financially which will translate to more respect.

Through a rather suspicious encounter, Ekema meets a new friend who helps him win the annual fishing competition which earns him the bragging rights as King fisher for a year, a title which comes with privileges that see his fortunes swell. Fate finally smiles on him and he gets the respect he has been craving. Soon though, he discovers his new friend wants a lot more than he can offer. What ensues is a battle for his life as it turns out his friend is Kuva, a marine spirit looking for someone to lure into bringing her back to the land of the living.

The movie Kuva seeks to bring to the light the fact that true happiness is not a function of how much material wealth a person possesses. Real happiness should not come from what you own or how people see you, but from valuing the important things in life, having people in your life who cherish you for being human first, a lesson that comes at great cost to Ekema.
